FERPA
The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student's education record. Except for directory information, all information contained in the education records of a student are considered confidential.
Students have the right to further restrict their directory information by making such a request to the Office of the Registrar.
- Callers from outside the university requesting information about a student should be referred to the Office of the Registrar. This is the case whether or not a student has placed a restriction on his or her record.
- Before releasing any directory information, it is CRUCIAL to ALWAYS look first for the privacy shade icon
.
- If there is a directory exclusion preventing release of certain information to the public, the data is considered confidential . However, University officials with a legitimate need still have access to the restricted information.
- In a case where a student has requested ALL directory information be restricted a No Data Designated Releasable message will be displayed with no links to any releasable data.
